Is maintaining your balance more of a challenge these days? Is it just a sign of aging or maybe an inner ear problem?
Did you know it could also be a toxic build up in your body?
When you think of detoxifying your body, you typically think of the liver. Although your liver is the primary organ for filtering our blood and neutralizing toxins; the stomach, intestines, gallbladder, kidneys, lungs, cardiovascular system, lymphatic system, and even the skin play large roles in helping our bodies eliminate toxins.
What is a toxin? Anything that the body perceives as harmful. Toxins include everything from cigarette smoke, alcohol, mercury, to chemicals like BPA. Toxins also include pharmaceutical drugs such as over-the-counter drugs relievers and prescription drugs.
Why Do Toxins Affect Your Balance?
When the filtering organs are not functioning properly, toxins hang around in our bodies making us sick … eventually or sometimes immediately.
As toxins begin to build up in the body, there is a direct effect on neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers, in the body with the messages for which they are responsible to send. One type of message is ‘proprioceptors’ which the brain uses to integrate information regarding its overall sense of body position, movement, and acceleration, thus affecting balance and coordination. These messages are slowed and in extreme cases, even blocked when toxins build up. This is why a balance test can be a good indicator of toxicity in the body,
Keep in mind that if someone has had a brain injury causing neurological damage, inner ear damage, or a recent concussion, this test will likely not be valid.
Here’s how you can do a simple balance test for toxicity at home.
The Balance Test
- Stand next to a table with your hand on it.
- Lift one leg off the ground.
- Let go of the table.
- Count the number of seconds (up to 20) you can keep from putting your foot down and note your stability.
- If you pass the test (see scoring below), repeat with your eyes closed.
- Excellent–Maintains balance for 20 seconds or more (15 seconds with eyes closed).
- Satisfactory–Maintains balance for 11-19 seconds.
- Poor–Maintains balance for 5-10 seconds.
- Failure–Maintains balance for less than 5 seconds.
Note: Make sure you are barefooted or wearing socks only for this test. High heels would not be a good idea, ladies. 🙂
If you fail this test (eyes open or closed), it would be a good idea to avoid a ‘field sobriety test’ (where you have to walk a straight line for the police) until you can undergo a detoxification protocol. See your health care practitioner to make sure of the following: you are healthy enough to detox (your elimination pathways are open and healthy), to determine what type of toxins you may have, and the proper detoxification protocol.
