Food ALLERGIES can cause hives, rashes, digestive upset and even anaphylactic shock. We know about those dangers.
But what about food SENSITIVITIES? Many times food sensitivities have no outward symptoms.
They can quietly wreak havoc on our bodies with nary a sign.
People with neurological, gastrointestinal, and movement disorders often suffer from food sensitivities.
Typical food sensitivity symptoms can be any of the following:
- Moodiness and irritability
- Brain fog
- Food cravings
- Joint pain
- Acne and Rosacea
- Dark circles
- Gas, bloating, constipation
- Blood sugar dysregulation
- Post nasal drip
Food allergies can cause asthma when they affect the respiratory tract.
Headache and insomnia can be the result when the nervous system is affected.
Indigestion, irritable colon, constipation or diarrhea are affected when the GI tract is involved.
Gluten is one of the most infamous foods that can cause sensitivities. Dairy is number two.
Then comes eggs, nuts, soy and many others.
Left unchecked, a food sensitivity can turn into leaky gut, more food sensitivities, autoimmune diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, and more.
How do you know if you have Food Sensitivities?
A food sensitivity test, of course!
The most accurate food sensitivity tests check for IgG antibodies, which cause delayed reactions to foods.
But it is also a good idea to check for IgE antibodies. These antibodies cause immediate reactions–the ones that you typically know about. But you may not know which food triggers the reaction.
IgE reactions release histamine in the body, causing a reaction within minutes or hours.
There are a lot of food sensitivity tests out there. It is important to ask these questions:
- How many foods does the test cover?
- Does it cover IgG and IgE antibodies?
- Is it a finger prick kit or a blood draw from a lab?
- Does it include a Candida Albicans test (fungal overgrowth)?
- How much does it cost?
I recommend the Food Sensitivity test from Meridian Valley Labs.
The cost is currently $277.40 for either a finger prick kit or a blood draw kit. You take the kit to a lab (they use Any Lab Test Now locations). It covers 190 foods plus Candida.
Keep in mind that the lab drawing your blood will charge a fee, typically $25, to draw the blood, prepare it and ship off the kit. The kit must be ordered by a healthcare practitioner (like me!).
Other labs that we work with who offer a food sensitivity test are:
- Great Plains Labs $219, covers 93 foods plus Candida, IgG and IgE, blood draw or finger prick, ordered by practitioner
- Direct Labs $399, covers 87 foods, Quest Diagnostics draws the blood, IgG and IgE, blood draw, patient can order
- DHA Labs $215, Labcorp blood draw, covers 93 foods plus Candida, blood draw or finger prick (kit comes from Great Plains Labs), patient can order
- Life Extension $198 covers 95 foods, $375 covers 190 foods, IgG only, finger prick, patient can order
How do you get rid of Food Sensitivities?
Fortunately, the gut heals very quickly! Therefore, food sensitivities can heal quickly too.
With the right protocol and a few quality supplements, you can heal your gut in a matter of months.
The steps are known as the Four R’s:
- Remove inflammatory foods, toxins, infections, and parasites
- Restore the enzymes and acids necessary for proper digestion
- Re-inoculate with healthy bacteria from probiotics
- Repair the gut with the nutrients and amino acids it needs from collagen
Once you receive your test results and you know what foods you are sensitive or allergic to, you must eliminate those foods from your diet.
But only temporarily, hopefully.
You can usually re-introduce foods that you are sensitive to slowly and one at a time once you have eliminated that food from your diet and healed your gut.
Hopefully, this step won’t be forever. It can take 1 month to 6 months to be sure that the antibodies to these foods have died before slowly reintroducing these foods one by one.
My elimination protocol is much longer than most, but I find that it is much more effective. Once you become accustomed to avoiding these foods, it becomes second nature.
It’s important to do this step first before moving on to the other steps or you will be wasting your time trying to repair your gut while still feeding it foods that are causing problems!
Healing infections and getting rid of parasites are important parts of the Remove step. Contact me for simple protocols for eliminating those nasty buggers.
Detoxing your life is the last piece of the Remove step. Reducing toxins in your life may appear to be a daunting task at first, but it doesn’t have to be.

Many times, the reason that food sensitivities develop is because we eat too many easily digestible carbs. The stomach gets lazy and stops making adequate supplies of stomach acid.
Stomach acid prevents heartburn (yes, I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but it’s true) and it kills pathogens like bad bacteria, parasites and such.
Leaky gut can develop as well. When our food isn’t broken down properly, oversized food particles move into the small intestine and slip out between the lining of the gut into the blood stream.
The immune system doesn’t recognize these large particles and flags them as enemy.
That’s how antibodies develop. There you have it–food allergies or sensitivities.
Adding some digestive enzymes is helpful during this Restore step. Enzymes like lipase, amylase, papain, bromelain, trypsin, etc. Contact me for recommendations.
You can increase stomach acid simply by adding Apple Cider Vinegar or Lemon juice or even Hydrochloric Acid (HCL aka stomach acid) wherever you can.
Probiotics are helpful to keep healthy bacteria in the colon (large intestine).
Be aware that your small intestine shouldn’t have bacteria in it. If it does, you may have SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth).
The colon should have lots of good bacteria. Antibiotics wipe out all the bacteria, good or bad. Antibiotics can have long-lasting effects on bowel flora.
Eating fermented food can be another healthful way to introduce good bacteria into your gut.
Many people with digestive disorders find that probiotics cause them to have bloating and gas. The right probiotic can avoid this issue. Contact me for suggestions.
Gut healing supplements are essential at this stage.
Marshmallow root, slippery elm, aloe vera, L-glutamine, deglycyrrhizanated licorice extract and other nutrients are fabulous digestive healers.
An alternative and wonderful source of gut healing nutrients is in bone broth. Enjoy a hot mug of bone broth every day!
Include a daily Omega3 supplement as well, such as fish oil or krill oil.
This protocol normally takes only 30-60 days, but if you have complications like Candida, SIBO, IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), parasites, gut infections, etc., it will take longer. You will need to manage those conditions first before you can heal your gut.
I’m Living Proof
How do I know this works? I’m living proof.
My initial food allergy/sensitivity test a couple of years ago showed that I was sensitive to:
- All Beans
- Yellow Squash
And I had Candida Albicans, unbeknownst to me.
After eliminating those foods, going through the Four R protocol and addressing the Candida, I took the test again and it was completely clear!
Even more amazing, my bowels became regular, my perpetual post-nasal drip stopped and my skin cleared up. Bonus!
By that time (6 months later), I had slowly reintroduced eggs, almonds, some beans and squash one at a time.
I tried to bring back gluten but it made me feel all kinds of awful, so I decided to eliminate it permanently. Good riddance!
If you or someone you love is struggling with their health (whether physical or emotional) and cannot seem to find the underlying cause, checking for food sensitivities can be the key to unlocking the solution.
