I graduated! Very proud to be certified as a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner or NTP. As many of you know, nutrition has been a long-time passion of mine. I study nutrition books with reckless abandon. Every webinar, seminar or class where I can learn something new about nutrition, you can bet I’m there!
I am thrilled to make nutrition my life’s work now.
Very soon, I will be opening my practice focusing on emotional wellness with nutrition. Stress and emotional distress can be mere symptoms of an underlying imbalance in the body. This is a relatively new field but one that is growing rapidly. And for good reason.
Depression and Anxiety are Rampant
Did you know….
- 1 out of 4 women in their 40’s and 50’s are on some sort of psychiatric medication. Women are twice as likely as men to have depression. (A Mind of Your Own–Dr. Kelly Brogan, psychiatrist)
- Major depression is expected to be the second leading cause of disability by 2020 worldwide. (Primal Body, Primal Mind–Nora T. Gedgaudas, CNS, CNT)
- The number of Americans on disability because of mental disorders has tripled over the last 30 years. (Breakthrough Depression Solution, Dr. James M. Greenblatt, psychiatrist).
Most of us think of depression as simply being ‘sad’ all the time. Certainly the ads for antidepressants depict it that way. But depression has many faces.
Depression can manifest itself as anger, irritability, moodiness, laziness, exhaustion, overwhelmed, low libido, insomnia, cravings, distraction, racing thoughts, panic, risky behavior, binge-eating, poor memory, stomach problems, aches and pains, crying, workaholic, alcohol or drug abuse.
Any of those symptoms sound familiar?
The Pills aren’t Working
Medications can be great blessings in life, especially for acute illnesses and life-saving efforts. However, two-thirds of patients with depression who have been treated with antidepressants continue to have symptoms that impair their daily life.
Further, 70% of those who seem to recover, symptoms return.
About half the studies fail to show any benefit beyond that of a placebo, a pill that contains no medication at all. (Breakthrough Depression Solution, Dr. James M. Greenblatt)
And the side effects? The list of side effects that antidepressants may cause is very long:
- blurred vision
- decreased sex drive
- dry mouth
- erectile dysfunction
- panic attacks
- stomach problems
- weight gain
But before you go and chuck your antidepressant or anti-anxiety medicine in the trash can, STOP! Withdrawal symptoms can be even worse.
Withdrawing from an anxiety medicine like Klonopin can be worse than heroin withdrawal. (The Mood Cure, Julia Ross) With the right detoxification protocol and the approval and close monitoring of your prescribing doctor, severe withdrawal symptoms can be avoided. Your body must be prepped for the withdrawal in order to lessen or avoid those symptoms.
Treatment for Emotional Distress and Stress
The brain has an incredibly high need for nutrients and energy (and fat!). When those needs are not met, the brain cannot function at its best, leading to emotional symptoms. Add this to the stresses of life, traumatic situations and the aging process and you have a recipe for disaster. For some people this leads to a chronic state of stress, for others it spirals and descends into deep sadness.
Here’s the good news…
Did you know that most emotional and stress symptoms are caused by some underlying physiological imbalances such as food allergies, thyroid imbalances, chronic infection/inflammation, hormone imbalances, adrenal issues or blood sugar dysfunction?
If you discover the underlying problem and resolve it, the emotional problem usually resolves too. Not with pills, but with the right nutrition for your needs. That’s my coaching plan.
Together, we find the root of the problem. We don’t just put a band-aid over the splinter, we remove the splinter first, so to speak.
Whether you are on pharmaceutical medications or not (and please don’t stop your meds), we can help. We don’t guess–we test. Your test results and your symptoms can lead us to the right protocol.
We can put together an individual treatment plan involving the right foods, some lifestyle changes, and supplements. No calorie, carbs or fat counting needed–in fact, no counting at all! My goal is to restore health, not simply reduce symptoms.
Wish me success! I’ll be launching my practice very soon!
Here’s your simple change for the day: Dig down to the underlying physiological cause of emotional distress and stress.
