In this video, I demonstrate the functional evaluation point that assesses neurological and detoxification issues. The Balance test is a test for toxicity.
A functional evaluation involves a series of non-invasive tests that uses three different types of reflexes to determine the health of a particular organ or system in the body. For more information about functional evaluation tests, see my article DIY Functional Evaluation Tests for Wellness.
Your body can tell you when something is wrong. That’s what symptoms are all about. In today’s hectic world, sadly, we have become disconnected with our bodies’ innate ability to communicate what it needs.
This functional evaluation tool, however, helps us to reconnect to that innate communication ability.
Let your body tell you what’s wrong. It will, if you let it.
These non-invasive tests allow the body to tell US where it is out of balance.
Remember that these tests are not meant to replace the battery of sophisticated lab tests that can and should be done to assess your health. It’s only an additional tool for your use.
Is it Toxicity or Aging?
Is maintaining your balance more of a challenge these days? Is that just a sign of aging or maybe an inner ear problem?
Or maybe it’s a detoxification issue.
The Balance test is a general test of your neurological and detoxification functions. The more toxins your body holds onto, the less your brain is able to help you control your body’s sense of balance.
When you think of detoxifying your body, you typically think of the liver. Although the liver is the primary organ for filtering our blood and neutralizing toxins; the stomach, intestines, gallbladder, kidneys, lungs, cardiovascular system, lymphatic system, and even the skin play large roles in helping our bodies eliminate toxins.
Why Toxins Affect our Balance
Speaking of toxins, what exactly is a toxin? We throw that word around a lot but what does it really mean?
Basically, a toxin is anything that the body perceives as harmful. Toxins include everything from cigarette smoke, alcohol, mercury, to chemicals in plastics and aluminum cans like BPA.
Toxins also include pharmaceutical drugs such as over-the-counter drugs, pain relievers and prescription drugs.
When our filtering organs are not functioning properly, toxins hang around in our bodies making us sick … either eventually or sometimes immediately.
As toxins begin to build up in the body, there is a direct effect on neurotransmitters, which are the chemical messengers between cells.
One type of message is known as ‘proprioceptors‘ which the brain uses to integrate information regarding its overall sense of body position, movement, and acceleration, which affects our balance and coordination.
These messages are slowed down and in extreme cases, even blocked when toxins build up.
This is why a balance test can be a good indicator of overall toxicity in the body.
The Balance Test
Keep in mind that if someone has had a brain injury, inner ear damage, or a recent concussion, this test will likely not be valid for them.
Here’s how you can do a simple balance test for toxicity at home:
- First, stand next to a table with your hand on it.
- Next, lift one leg off the ground.
- Then, let go of the table.
- Count the number of seconds (up to 20) that you can keep from putting your foot down and take note of your stability.
- If you pass the test, repeat the test with your eyes closed (that’s much harder).
Here’s how to score the balance test:
- Excellent–Maintains balance for 20 seconds or more (The score would be 15 seconds with eyes closed).
- Satisfactory–Maintains balance for 11-19 seconds.
- Poor–Maintains balance for 5-10 seconds.
- Failure–Maintains balance for less than 5 seconds.
Make sure you are barefooted or wearing socks only for this test. High heels would not be a good idea, ladies.
Before starting a detox protocol, you and your health care practitioner need to make sure of the following:
- You are healthy enough to detox, meaning your elimination pathways are open and healthy.
- Determine what type of toxins you may have.
- Prepare the proper detoxification protocol for you.
Can neurological or detoxification issues cause emotional unbalance? Yep. That’s why they call it balance.
The Balance test is a quick and effective tool to get to the root of your moods.
