In this video, I demonstrate the functional evaluation test that assesses the liver as it relates to blood sugar handling.
A functional evaluation involves a series of non-invasive tests that uses three different types of reflexes to determine the health of a particular organ or system in the body. For more information about functional evaluation tests, see my article DIY Functional Evaluation Tests for Wellness.
Your body can tell you when something is wrong. That’s what symptoms are all about. In today’s hectic world, sadly, we have become disconnected with our bodies’ innate ability to communicate what it needs.
This functional evaluation tool, however, helps us to reconnect to that innate communication ability.
Let your body tell you what’s wrong. It will, if you let it.
These non-invasive tests allow the body to tell US where it is out of balance.
Remember that these tests are not meant to replace the battery of sophisticated lab tests that can and should be done to assess your health. It’s only an additional tool for your use.
The Liver keeps us Energized
The Third Rib test is a quick check of the liver.
The liver has more than 500 jobs in the body. Be kind to your liver, it’s so, so important.
With regard to blood sugar handling, the liver is responsible for:
- Making and storing glucose for energy.
- Storing glucose in the form of glycogen for future use.
- Producing glucose out of stored glycogen and also from protein.
But it also makes ketones, an important source of energy made from fat.
When we are dependent on glucose for our source of energy, regular meals become crucial. The body can only store so much glucose.
However, when our body runs more on ketones made from fat, we have more stores of energy and can go longer between meals.
Would you rather be a fat burner or a sugar burner?
Yep, I thought so. Find out how you can switch from sugar burning to fat burning in as little as two weeks at the link.
The Third Rib Test
Let me show you how to perform the 3rd Rib test of the Liver.
- This test begins on the clavicle (collar bone) on your right side. Count that as your 1st rib.
- Count down to your 3rd rib. Note that there is usually a big gap between the 1st and 2nd ribs, but every body is different.
- Once you locate the 3rd rib, move your fingers out to the right towards your arm to the point where the bone turns to cartilage and gets a little softer.
- Press in toward your body with your fingers checking for pain and rigidity.
- Compare it to the 3rd rib on the left side for a basis of comparison. If both sides feel the same, ignore the results.
Note that if you have recently worked out in this area or have an injury in this area, the test won’t be valid.
Scoring Your Results
Did you feel any pain or tenderness on that 3rd rib?
Rate it on a scale from 1-10. One, meaning I feel the pressure of my fingers but no pain all the way up to 10, meaning it really hurts.
Be sure to record your tenderness rating and today’s date so that you can monitor your progress.
Will liver dysfunction cause you to feel out of sorts? Oh yea.
For lots of reasons. For one, dysfunction in the blood sugar handling system is one of the most common causes for mood disorders.
The 3rd Rib test for the liver is an excellent tool for getting to the root of your moods.
