In this video, I’ll demonstrate the functional evaluation test that assesses hydration. The Vascular Hydration Indicator is a test for hydration.
A functional evaluation involves a series of non-invasive tests that uses three different types of reflexes to determine the health of a particular organ or system in the body. For more information about functional evaluation tests, see my article DIY Functional Evaluation Tests for Wellness.
Your body can tell you when something is wrong. That’s what symptoms are all about. In today’s hectic world, sadly, we have become disconnected with our bodies’ innate ability to communicate what it needs.
This functional evaluation tool, however, helps us to reconnect to that innate communication ability.
Let your body tell you what’s wrong. It will, if you let it.
These non-invasive tests allow the body to tell US where it is out of balance.
Remember that these tests are not meant to replace the battery of sophisticated lab tests that can and should be done to assess your health. It’s only an additional tool for your use.
Water–Not Enough or Too Much?
You’ve heard it before, but I’ll say it again. Water, it’s the most important nutrient in the body, bar none.
And, it is the most common nutritional deficiency, ironically.
Water does so many things:
- transports nutrients throughout the body
- moistens the air that we breathe in our lungs
- cushions bones and joints
- regulates body temperature
- removes wastes and flushes toxins
- maintains the electrical properties of our cells
- aids in healing
Not only water, but electrolytes are vital too. Electrolytes are the minerals that allow water to be absorbed in our cells.
But, if you drink TOO much water, you can run in danger of flushing out your electrolytes which can leave you weak and even pass out.
Ask me how I know about that! 🙁
So which minerals are the electrolytes? The major electrolytes are: sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, chloride, phosphate, and bicarbonate.
Symptoms of Dehydration
Water is the one thing that is imperative to keep track of your daily consumption.
Remember to drink one-half of your body weight in ounces of water daily. And then for every diuretic drink, add 1.5 times more water to your daily total.
You may even want to add some sea salt to your water to ensure you get plenty of electrolytes.
Diuretics such as soft drinks, coffee, alcohol, packaged fruit juices and even some herbal teas will rob us of water causing it to be excreted rather than absorbed.
Some early signs and symptoms of dehydration include:
As dehydration worsens, so do the symptoms:
- joint pain
- back pain
The Vascular Hydration Indicator
A hydration test you can perform at home is known as the vascular hydration indicator.
You will need the help of a friend for this test.
Here’s how to do the Vascular Hydration test:
- Stand up with your arms hanging by your sides.
- Your friend should examine and palpate (meaning touch with light pressure) the veins on the back of your right hand while it is hanging by your side.
- Raise your left hand up to the level of your heart with the elbow bent.
- Then slowly raise your right arm (with the arm straight) to a level equal to the other arm. Let your friend do all the work, you should not help raise your arm.
- Examine and palpate the veins on your right hand again.
Compare your findings to these results:
- Excellent: Veins are the same as when by your side
- Fair: Veins are reduced but still visible
- Poor: Veins are no longer visible or palpable
Record these results and today’s date so you can monitor your progress.
Now go drink some more water!
Can dehydration cause poor mood symptoms? Yes, it may start with fatigue, but can quickly move into low moods until you are rehydrated.
The vascular hydration indicator test is a wonderful tool to help you get to the root of your moods.
