Starting a healthy lifestyle program? Well then, cleaning the gunk out of your body is a great way to start.
It doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. You don’t have to go to a special facility either. You can detoxify your body yourself.
Here are six simple ways to detox your body at home:
- Dry Brushing
- Infrared Sauna
- Liver/Gall Bladder Flush
- Coffee Enemas
- Colon Cleanse
- Epsom Salt Baths
I’m hooked on dry brushing, it makes my skin tingle before my shower or bath!
Dry brushing is a simple approach to stimulating immune function and the lymphatic system, not to mention great for glowing skin.
All you will need is a dry brush available from Amazon, Ulta and many other sources. For complete instructions and recommendations, see my previous article Dry Brushing for Healthy Skin and Lymphatic System.
Infrared saunas are not the saunas of yesteryear where you sweat to exhaustion. Indeed, there is some sweating involved but no more than a good workout, except that you are sitting still.
Dr. Mercola reports that “Sauna therapy has many health benefits, including expelling of toxins, improving blood circulation, killing disease-causing microbes and improving mitochondrial function.”
Infrared saunas come in two flavors: near- and far-infrared. There are different benefits of each. Search around your area to try one out. Sauna studios are popping up everywhere. Be sure to ask if they are infrared.
New technology allows infrared saunas to be built small enough to have one of your own at home.
I thought it would be a draining experience but, in fact, it is quite energizing especially when you follow it with a dry brush and shower. Be sure to drink plenty of water and replenish your electrolytes during and after a sauna session.
Liver/Gall Bladder Flush
Ever woken up in the 1 am to 3 am time frame and you can’t get back to sleep?
Frustrating, isn’t it?
That’s when the liver is doing background repair processing. Check out this body clock information based on Chinese medicine for other organs.
Your liver has about 500 different functions in the body and is your major filtering organ. When the liver is not functioning well, lots of things can go wrong.
Fat is absolutely essential for every single cell in our body. The gall bladder‘s main job is to store bile so your body can break down fats properly. That’s why periodically flushing your liver and gall bladder is a good idea to keep them working at peak performance.
I shared a fabulous Liver/Gallbladder Flush previously that uses epsom salt, pink grapefruit, and extra virgin olive oil. It is an overnight procedure, so it is super convenient.
You want me to put coffee where?!
After you get past the ‘oh how gross’ factor, coffee enemas provide a truly powerful method of detoxification.
They support liver function, dilute bile, dilate blood vessels, reduce inflammation of the intestines and support the phase-two liver detoxification pathway.
Coffee enemas promote a sense of relaxation, reduce pain and promote well-being by stimulating parasympathetic response (the ‘rest and digest’ response which is the opposite of the ‘flight or fight’ response).
The coffee enema requires an enema bag kit (available from most drugstores), non-chlorinated water, and organic, ground caffeinated coffee. See this excellent step-by-step resource for conducting a coffee enema written by Dr. Lawrence Wilson.
If you can’t afford a colonic procedure or the thought of it grosses you out, a simple colon cleanse can be done at home with just psyllium powder and purified water. Psyllium powder is available online and is simply fiber from a psyllium plant.
One teaspoon of psyllium seed powder twenty minutes before each meal (3 x day) reduces glucose absorption and also reduces hunger. This process can be done for five days every three months. This procedure is offered by Dr. Leslie E. Korn.
Discontinue taking any supplements, but eat your regular diet. You may experience feelings of fullness or gas (not recommended for those with SIBO-small intestine bacteria overgrowth).
- Add one level teaspoon of psyllium seed powder to eight ounces of water.
- Shake or stir to mix thoroughly in a jar or shaker.
- Drink immediately (or it will solidify).
- Follow with an 8-oz glass of water.
- Repeat 3 times a day for five days for a total of fifteen doses.
- Resume your supplements and take probiotics or other fermented foods for five days afterward.

Epsom Salt Baths
An epsom salt bath is nothing new, but often forgotten as a tool for detoxification. It is a simple way to draw waste out of the body.
All you need is epsom salt, baking soda and, optionally, bentonite clay. Epsom salt is actually magnesium sulfate. The magnesium will help relax muscles and assist sleep. The baking soda helps to alkalize the body and bentonite clay has wonderful detoxification qualities as the Wellness Mama reports.
Simply add to your hot bath and soak in it:
- 1 cup epsom salt
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/4 cup bentonite clay (some will settle in the bottom of the tub but rinses out easily)
Add your favorite essential oil (about 4 drops) if you prefer.
Detoxifying your body doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. These six methods along with a healthy diet and exercise will keep you ahead of the toxins. These are wonderful ways to detox and will help jump-start your healthy lifestyle.
