Laundry detergent is outrageously expensive, right? And who knows what ingredients are in laundry detergent on the grocery store aisles? Tide used to be my favorite brand, but after taking a look at the ingredients and the “F” rating on the Environmental Working Group site (ewg.org), I no longer use it.
Did you know that manufacturers of cleaning products are not required to post their full ingredient list? It’s true and scary.
Now you can make your own laundry detergent with just a few simple ingredients. Save tons of money and exposure to who-knows-what chemicals that are in conventional laundry detergents.
Here’s What You will Need:
- 1 cup washing soda (I buy my washing soda here).
- 1 cup borax (I buy my borax here).
- 1 bar Castile soap (I buy my Castile soap from Thrive Market).
- ½ cup baking soda
- 30 drops of Lemon essential oil.
- Large container with a lid
Lemon oil is a natural cleansing and purifying antioxidant.
I get my Certified Organic essential oils from here. Each batch is independently tested for quality and purity.
Tip: Washing soda is merely baking soda that has been baked. Who knew?
Note: If you are concerned about the safety of Borax, check out this information about Borax from ScienceLab.
Environmental Working Group gives Borax an “F”rating. You can substitute more washing soda for borax, which is what I have done.
- Grate the castile soap with a cheese grater. You’ll need some muscle!
- Add all ingredients to the container and close the lid tightly.
- Shake the container vigorously.
- Use about 3 tablespoons per load.
Yes, I use this in my high efficiency (HE) washing machine. Works great!
