We need to change the way we think about mental illness, such as Anxiety and Depression. These are just symptoms, not a diagnosis of a disease or disorder.
Psychiatrists use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) to diagnose their patients using a collection of their symptoms. There are almost 300 disorders in the latest edition of that manual.
Based on that manual, you are diagnosed with a disorder or you are labeled with a “fill-in-the-blank” condition such as Bipolar Disorder or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder or whatever.
You have a label.
At first, when you receive a diagnosis, you may feel relief to know there is an explanation for your symptoms.
You’re not crazy. You have a disorder.
After the years wear on, do you find that that initial relief turns to frustration?
Maybe the medications aren’t helping anymore or you’re tired of feeling drugged? Or you’re just sick of being sick.
You may even start to question whether your medication is causing your symptoms.
We now know that physiological imbalances underlie most psychological symptoms.
Blood sugar imbalances are a very common cause of anxiety. In most cases, this imbalance can be corrected very quickly.
Thyroid dysfunction is another issue that manifests in psychological symptoms as well as physical ones.
Autoimmune disorders, Food sensitivities, Amino Acid imbalances, Mineral deficiencies and even Parasites can cause psychological symptoms.
The list goes on and on.
Don’t resign yourself to a lifetime diagnosis of mental illness!
Find out what is at the root of your emotional distress.
You may have to dig deep. And most likely, you will have to step outside of the conventional medical model.
Where to Find Help in your Journey
You may want to start with an Integrative medicine doctor. You may even be lucky enough to find one in your insurance plan, as I was.
An Integrative medicine doctor can be an MD or a DO (Doctor of Osteopathic medicine).
What’s the difference? Find out here. Both can prescribe pharmaceutical medicine (and they will in acute situations), but usually prefer to use natural solutions like nutritional supplements. They incorporate a variety of healing modalities in their practices such as chiropractic manipulation, massage, infrared sauna, colonics, etc.
There are many other practitioners that specialize in integrative healing besides MDs and DOs.
Many chiropractors (DC, Doctor of Chiropractic) act as Functional medicine doctors and can be an excellent place to start. In fact, my DC was the first to uncover the root of my health problems.
Doctors of Oriental Medicine (DOM) can be a good choice too. As well, Acupuncturists, Nutritional Therapy Practitioners (like me!) and Naturopathic Doctors are good resources.
How can you find an Integrative or Functional or Naturopathic practitioner? Here are some resources to get you started:
- Integrative Medicine for Mental Health (IMMH)
- International College of Integrative Medicine (ICIM)
- Institute for Functional Medicine
- American Association of Naturopathic Physicians
- American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM)
- University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine
If you cannot find a suitable practitioner in your area, there are many practitioners who can work with you virtually, over the phone or internet.
Please note that many of the lab tests that may be necessary to diagnose your symptoms may not be covered by your health insurance.
Sadly, the insurance companies control how conventional doctors diagnose and treat their patients. Fortunately, many doctors are moving away from this paradigm.
And definitely, supplements that may be prescribed by your healthcare practitioner, will not be covered by insurance.
